In 1979 Breitling saw parts of its company go into liquidation due to bankruptcy, and Helmut Sinn, the founder of Sinn watches, bought the rights to use the layouts of Breitling’s 806 and 809 Navitimer watch dials. This is the story of Colin’s Sinn 903 Chronograph. Helmut Sinn purchased all completed stock and the rights to the Navitimer reference 806 and 809 designs. To this day, Sinn produces these “Navitimers” under full legal protection as Sinn’s own reference 903.
The Sinn 903 is a worthy successor to the original Navitimer, has an interesting history how it was created when the original Breitling company went out of business, and has a superior water resistance, but a slightly more cumbersome circular slide rule than the Navitimer. When I was doing some research on the Navitimer, I came across the Sinn 903. Apparently, the Sinn 903 is very much the same watch as the Navitimer, as Sinn bought the rights from Brietling when Breitling was in bankruptcy. I had heard somewhere that when Breitling went into meltdown back in the day, they sold rights for the Navitimer design to Sinn and at least one other maker I know of, Aviation. Apparently it wasn't exclusive rights. When Breitling when bankrupt, Sinn purchased the rights to reproduce the design and released the Sinn 903, which is essentially the Navitimer, but w/o the branding. For those folks looking to enjoy a smaller and more affordable .
